A minimum of 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
