Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
