European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
