Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
