The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
